Presentation Description
Institution: Eastern Palliative Care Inc. and La Trobe University - VIC, Australia
Since 2020 I have been conducting research into Eastern Palliative Care Inc.’s (EPC) Biography Program, a volunteer-facilitated life storytelling program through La Trobe University. The key research participants were the clients who tell their story, the volunteers who facilitate this process, the EPC staff, and client carers. A primary aspect of the research was articulating the strong philosophical foundation of the program that encompasses their approach to life storytelling and volunteer management. The adaptable, collaborative, relational and creative philosophy locates the Biography Program as operating from the perspective of a social model of health. Illustrating the creativity of the holistic aspects of the social models, the research methodology (narrative inquiry) and primary analysis method (the Listening Guide method) embodies the Biography Programs storied nature. In this presentation I will provide an overview of the research while focusing on the dynamic voices of the key participant groups, the life storytelling process, and its philosophy as an invitation to person-centred healthcare, and will include excerpts of the research poetry developed.
