Vivien Stuart’s PhD novel is an ethical narrative which enhances understanding of palliative care.

Why would anyone wish to read a novel about palliative care?
This novel is so much more; it is the personal journeys of three remarkable women with palliative care a central theme.

Who are the principal characters?
Alice has sought refuge in Perth from an abusive marriage in Adelaide. Maedhbh has been compelled by unemployment to leave Ireland. Gabby has reluctantly left South Africa seeking a better life for her son. All are ultimately hospice nurses.

Does the reader become familiar with the patients?
Yes, and the families too. There is a diverse group of patients represented: rich and poor, young and old, religious and irreligious, Aboriginal and immigrant.

Does the novel enhance the reader’s understanding of quality palliative ecare?
Does it offer a pathway to open discussion? Reader comments suggest it succeeds on both counts:

“Beautiful writing can pull apart life’s hardest questions like no other art form. …This tender novel explores ethical end-of-life issues in both political and personal ways. It’s stirring and it stays with you.”
