Palliative Care is often thought to be about end of life care, with many people not understanding that the scope of palliative care extends much beyond this. This misconception can lead to patient, family and clinician distress around palliative care referrals. We assessed how palliative care clinicians deal with this common and often distressing misconception in the outpatient setting using video recordings of initial palliative care consultations, highlighting several different common practises. This work has led onto a multidisciplinary project within the hospital setting to try to empower and support other speciality clinicians to be able to talk to patients and their families about palliative care during the referral process, therefore reducing the stigma and distress associated with these referrals.
