Presentation Description

The older people are the closer they are to the end of their life.  We are living longer and dying older. But this is often not discussed. Many older people will make use of aged care services in the years immediately prior to death and most aged care clients and residents are over the age of 75 years. Supporting them with care at the end of life is more than a distant consideration. Naturally, as in life, care needs will vary and for some people these will be uncomplicated while others will experience more complex health care issues. The aged care workforce needs to be prepared for this role.

palliAGED plays an important part ensuring the availability and application of palliative care evidence and practice resources for the aged care sector. Over the past four years we have developed and released the palliAGED Practice Tip Sheets and the Introduction to palliative care modules to support education for those new to aged care and/or palliative care. In this time more than 23,000 booklets have been ordered and more than 40,000 modules completed. By embedding quality improvement surveys within the palliAGED modules we have been able to identify the areas of greatest confidence and the areas of training need for the aged care workforce. Based on responses from more than 1800 module participants these invaluable insights are now guiding resource development.  This grassroots approach to refining resources for education aims to provide meaningful content that assists aged care workers to gain confidence in their workplace and confidence to take on more education. We discuss the value and impact of these resources and how these responses have informed further refinements to the modules and future development of new resources to support this critical workforce.
