Independent Lived Experience Specialist

Professional Bio

Shannon Calvert is an independent Lived Experience specialist with reputable experience working across several national government and non-government organisations in an advisory capacity in complex systems (eating disorders, mental health, suicide prevention and palliative care). As an Educator and Advisory Consultant, Shannon has trained and supported multidisciplinary teams and organisations on trauma-informed treatment interventions, the Lived Experience workforce, and embedding lived experience partnerships in co-designing policy, research, and education.

Her personal experience inspired her advocacy in Palliative care and mental health to support the respect, rights, and appropriate treatment choices for those affected. While experiencing her longstanding illness, Shannon became a carer for her mother, who received palliative care until her end of life. After her mother died in 2015, Shannon continued volunteering and advocating for people to access Advance Care planning and palliative care services and support. She was the vice president of Palliative Care WA (2017 - 2022), Board Director of Palliative Care Australia (2019 - 2022), and a current National Register of Palliative Care Consumers and Carers member. Recently, Shannon was commissioned by the National Eating Disorder Collaboration to lead and author a discussion paper for Government on Palliative Care and Eating Disorders.

Shannon continues to work with several national Boards and committees. She is the Lived Experience Co-Production Co-Lead at the Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre and Consumer Co-chair of the National Mental Health Consumer Carer Forum. In 2022 – 2023, Shannon was appointed to the Million Minds Mental Health Research Mission and the MRFF Childhood Mental Health Research Plan expert advisory panels to guide Australia's future roadmap in mental health and as a special adviser on the National Women's Health Advisory Council.
