Nikki Johnston OAM
Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, Lecturer in nursing - Next Practice Deakin and the University of Canberra
Professional Bio
I'm committed to ensuring that all Australians have equitable access to quality end-of-life care. To tackle the disparities in aged care, I developed the "Palliative Care Needs Round (PCNR)" concept with Dr Michael Chapman. This initiative has yielded statistically significant results in a randomised control trial, improving staff capabilities, and reducing unnecessary hospital admissions, thereby saving over $1.7 million in a 17-month period.
Professionally, I bring 30 years of clinical experience to my roles as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner and a lecturer at the University of Canberra. My contributions have been honoured with an Order of Australia Medal and the inaugural Federal Health Minister's Trailblazer Award from the Australian College of Nursing. In 2021, I was appointed as a member of the Professional Services Review Panel.
On the academic front, I'm a PhD student focused on researching the experience of reliving trauma near death. I was invited to provide expert testimony at the Royal Commission into Aged Care: Quality and Safety.
